Hospital beds are electrically or manually adjustable patient support surfaces classified as durable medical equipment (DME), engineered for repositioning, pressure injury prevention, fall management, and caregiver ergonomics. Primary buyers are hospital systems (med-surg, ICU, step-down), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs), with procurement typically triggered by new construction, fleet aging (>10–15 years), patient population shifts (e.g., bariatric program expansion), or technology obsolescence (lack of nurse-call or EHR integration). Volume contracts are normally routed through a group purchasing organization (GPO) such as Vizient, Premier, or HealthTrust.
This is a mixed field. Only a couple of these vendors are dedicated hospital bed suppliers; the others bring adjacent value — retrofits, safety beds for special populations, or broader distribution.
